The city of Los Angeles is laying claim to the title of the nation’s most powerful PV project. At 16.5  megawatts, the Westmont solar project comprises 50,000 photovoltaic modules spread over 50 acres on the roof of a warehouse and distribution center near the port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. The panels will produce an estimated 28 gigawatt-hours of power annually. Apple has a bigger solar atop its new headquarters in Cupertino, California – 17 MW – but LA officials argue that the city’s system puts out more power than Apple’s plant due to “highly efficient solar panels and unique roof design.”
