Recent onshore wind auctions in Spain and Germany confirm that the cost of renewables continues to fall in Europe, especially now that market economics – are determining pricing rather than government tariffs. Countries are shifting to auctions to sell wind power development and those are doing a better job of revealing the true cost of generation than former feed-in tariff schemes. In Germany’s first auction for onshore wind, the average bid of €57.1 per megawatt-hour was around 30 percent cheaper than under the previous feed-in tariff scheme. In Spain, an auction for around 3,000 MW of renewables went mainly to with onshore wind went for around €43 per MWh.
