California’s grid operator achieved a new record for renewable energy penetration, with clean energy sources peaking to provide more than two-thirds of the state’s electricity demand on the afternoon of May 13. The record followed on a week of strong wind and solar generation, with solar reaching a record output of 9.87 gigawatts on May 11 and an all-time wind record of nearly 4.8 GW two days later. In 2016, California met nearly a third of its electricity demand with renewable energy, including 20 perdent with solar, wind, geothermal and other non-hydro resources.
