Australia’s large-scale solar industry appears to be on solid ground, with developers closing deals to build 12 new commercial-scale solar power plants. With support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, construction has already begun at nine of the 12 plants, and the other three are a done deal. When completed, the 12 power plants will provide enough electricity to power 150,000 homes, and account for 10 percent of the new capacity needed to meet Australia’s 2020 renewable energy target. Australia has gone from zero to more than 20 large-scale solar plants in five years, During that rapid expansion, the total cost of large-scale solar projects has fallen by 40 percent.
