A North Carolina power provider has decided to retire a 116-megawatt coal-fired power plant even though it was built in 1990 and is relatively young for coal plants. The Edgecombe Genco plant, operated by a subsidiary of Newark Energy Center, will be deactivated in October 2020, as more competitive clean energy resources come online. Over the past year, more than two dozen solar projects have been started and are in various stages of construction in the northeastern part of North Carolina near the plant.
