U.S. wind developers plan to invest $96 billion in new wind power projects over the next four years, giving wind the largest pot of investment scheduled its energy competitors, namely gas and solar, according to an SNL Energy analysis of projects in the planning stages, SNL’s analysis found 49 GW of wind projects scheduled to come online between 2017 and 2020, worth an estimated $96 billion in investment. Over the past four years, almost 23 GW of wind projects were built, with an investment of $44 billion. The largest share of forward-looking wind investment is located within the Southwest Power Pool, with $24 billion planned over the next four years, an 87 percent increase from 2013-2016.
