While the U.S. solar market may be moving to smaller projects, international markets are still embracing giant solar projects, particularly in desert locations. The latest headline-grabbing project is a proposed 1.18-gigawatt solar farm in the United Arab Emirates. The project, which is moving closer to contract signing, would be the world’s largest – by far – generating enough electricity to power almost 200,000 homes, If all goes according to plan, the plant would come online in 2019. The previous title of largest solar farm belonged to First Solar’s 550-megawatt Topaz project in California but was replaced last year by the 648-MW Kamuthi project in India.
