Google has announced that it will reach 100 percent renewable energy for its global operations in 2017. As of next year, all of Google’s global data centers, operations and offices will operate on clean energy, some through direct ownership in projects and some through purchases and renewable energy credits that offset traditional generation. Google secures 2.6 gigawatts of energy worldwide and in locations where renewable purchase options don’t exist, it works with the local utilities to create them. Google also has an impressive track record on energy efficiency; it delivers 3.5 times percent more computing power than it did five years ago on the same amount of energy.
