Total natural gas usage across Texas fell more than 26 percent month on month for October 2016, according to the latest data from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the state’s transmission grid and wholesale energy market. Gas-fired generators supplied 36.7 percent of ERCOT’s energy, the lowest level since March 2014, compared with 44.4 percent in September and 47.9 perent in October 2015. Wind power filled in the gap left behind by the decline in natural gas’s share of the fuel mix, supplying 17 percent of ERCOT’s power needs in October, up from 11 percent in September and 12.3 percent in October 2015.
