As of year-end 2015, electric companies had installed 65 million smart meters in the United States, covering more than 50 percent of the nation’s households, according to a recent survey by the Institute for Electric Innovation. Already, more than 30 of the largest electric companies in the country have fully deployed smart meters. The IEI’s 2015 Smart Meter Survey also projected that deployments will reach 70 million smart meters by the end of 2016 and 90 million by 2020. The benefits of smart meters, according to the IEI, include: better monitoring for more efficient operation of the electricity grid; speedier restoration of electric service when outages occur; smoother integration renewables and energy efficiency; and delivering energy information to customers to provide them with smarter pricing options.
