A long-term system assessment of Texas energy needs by the state’s grid operator indicates that regardless of circumstances, solar will likely replace all of the expected capacity from retiring coal-burning power plants over the next 15 years. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas considered eight scenarios in its assessment, from extreme weather to continued low natural gas pricing, and determined that solar will comprise nearly all the new capacity, somewhere between 14 and 27 gigawatts.
