Clean energy deployment in China is vastly exceeding targets, putting the country years ahead of schedule for meeting its 2020 energy targets. As the fundamental structure of China’s economy changes – with low energy-intensity service sectors and private consumption replacing high-intensity manufacturing and heavy industry – China’s National Energy Agency’s has revised its work plan for 2016 to project that coal use will fall and carbon emissions will flatline this year, while the previous target of reaching 300 gigawatts of installed wind capacity will be reached two and half years in advance.
